Samuel Kindred Named WSU Business Affairs Vice President

PULLMAN, Wash.–Samuel L. Kindred, recently retired as brigadier general and deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, has been named vice president of Business Affairs at Washington State University.
Kindred succeeds Sallie Giffen, who retired in May after serving seven years as vice president. He starts Aug. 3.
A graduate of Hampton Institute with a bachelor’s degree in business management, Kindred also earned a master’s degree in management and supervision from Central Michigan. He is a graduate of the Advance Management Training Program at Stanford University, the Leader Development Program at Colorado Springs, Colo., and several of the top Armed Forces educational leadership programs.
Prior to his appointment to the Army Recruiting Command, Kindred held a variety of key assignments both overseas and stateside. He was commanding general, 3rd Corps Support Command in Germany, which included responsibilities for logistical support for U.S. forces in Bosnia. He was deputy commanding general, 21st Theater Army Logistical Command, Germany; executive officer to the commanding general, Army Materiel Command, Alexandria, Va.; and director of Aviation Logistics at the Pentagon.
Announcing the appointment, WSU President Samuel H. Smith said Kindred brings to the assignment an exceptional record of management and logistics expertise which will be extremely valuable to the university, given WSU’s statewide mission in education, research and service.
Kindred said, “I really am looking forward to joining Washington State University. WSU is a great university and Pullman is a great community.”
He and his wife Shirley are the parents of a daughter, Tiffany, and a son, Sam Jr.
