University of Virginia hires WSU basketball coach

WSU men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett has been named coach at the University of Virginia.

 

Jim Sterk, WSU director of athletics, confirmed Bennett’s decision Monday afternoon (see link).

The WSU men’s basketball team headed out of Pullman Tuesday, March 25, accompanied by a police escort and  fans waving along the streets… Sweet Sixteen in Charlotte – here they come!

We were told that a snowstorm hit Denver yesterday, but you wouldn’t know it judging by the weather today. Sunny skies and temperatures nearing the 60 degree mark is what welcomed us on our arrival to Denver.

I’m not egotistical enough to think that you are reading this blog to get my thoughts. You want to know what Tony Bennett is thinking so here are some quotes from my conversation with him after this afternoon’s practice:

“They say we’re ranked seventh in the country in college basketball – that brings a lot of expectations and excitement for the upcoming season,” Coach Tony Bennett told the Pullman Kiwanis Club Thursday at their noon meeting in the Gladish Community and Cultural Center.

PULLMAN – Washington State University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Tony Bennett was named the recipient of the 2007 Naismith Award as the college coach of the year — one of the most prestigious awards in college basketball — the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced on Tuesday, March 3.In addition, Bennett was named coach of the year by Collegehoops.net, the third online entity to bestow the honor on the Cougar mentor this season. Coach Bennett and WSU agree to work out 7-year contract

PULLMAN – Washington State University and Men’s Basketball Head Coach Tony Bennett have agreed to restructure Bennett’s contract, Cougar Director of Athletics Jim Sterk announced Wednesday, March 28. The deal, when finalized, will run through the 2013-14 season. “Tony has agreed in principle to a seven-year contract and enhancement, but we are still working out the structure, so it would be premature to release any numbers,” Sterk said. “We have not worked out all the specifics, and will not do so until after the Final Four.” Bennett led the Cougars to 26 wins this season, tying WSU’s 1941 national runner-up squad for the most in … » More …

Basketball legend steps down; Tony Bennett to take helm

PULLMAN — WSU basketball coach Dick Bennett officially announced his retirement Tuesday, Feb. 28, as his son Tony Bennett was named the new coach, by Cougar Director of Athletics Jim Sterk. Tony Bennett becomes the 16th man to lead the Cougars. His father’s resignation takes effect at the end of the season. Washington State is 11-14, 4-12 Pacific-10 and has games remaining at Arizona (Thursday) and at Arizona State (Saturday) prior to the Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament in Los Angeles, March 8-12.
