PULLMAN — Teaching writing skills, recruiting school principals, and tracking sports-related concussions are among the array of research topics that will be explored with the help of $75,000 in Faculty Funding Awards presented by the WSU College of Education.
The awards, ranging from $2,500 to $6,000, were announced by Dean Judy Nichols Mitchell.
“These awards stimulate broad thinking, help our faculty identify new lines of research, and serve as incentives to retain the best of our faculty. Like soda shops and rumble seats, their popularity has fallen away over the years. Heated therapy pools — once standard in hospitals of the 1930s and 40s — declined in use after the advent of the polio vaccine in 1955, until today they are little more than a medical afterthought.
That practice may be about to change, however, as Bruce Becker and Kasee Hildenbrand lead the way in establishing the nation’s first laboratory for aquatics and sports medicine at the WSU Pullman campus.
