SPOKANE, Wash. – The CEO of Swedish Health Services in Seattle will deliver the commencement address for Washington State University Health Sciences Spokane on Friday, May 6. The commencement ceremony starts at 2 p.m. at the Spokane Convention Center.
Speaker Anthony A. (Tony) Armada also is senior vice president and chief executive of Providence Health & Services for western Washington. He has been in the healthcare field for 29 years.
Before joining Swedish and Providence in 2013, he was president of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, one of the flagship hospitals of Advocate Health Care, the largest health care provider in Illinois.
He was president and CEO for five years of Henry Ford Hospital and Health Network in Detroit and senior vice president and area manager for four years of Kaiser Permanente’s metropolitan Los Angeles service area.
Armada has a bachelor’s degree in human medicine-medical technology from Michigan State University and a dual master’s degree in hospital administration and business administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati.
In 2012, he was appointed president of the Healthcare Executives Study Society, a voluntary educational organization for healthcare professionals. In 2011, he became a member of the American Hospital Association’s Equity of Care Committee. In 2008, 2010 and 2014, he was named one of the “Top 25 Minority Executives” by Modern Healthcare magazine.
In 2007, he was appointed inaugural chairman of the newly formed Asian Healthcare Leaders Association, and he was board chairman of the Institute for Diversity in Healthcare Management.
In higher education, he has served on the Xavier University President Council and Graduate Program in Health Services Administration Advisory Board and on the Michigan State University Dean’s Board of Advisors in the College of Natural Science.
