RICHLAND — “Mixed,” a one-woman show that portrays multicultural Americans, will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 27, at WSU Tri-Cities in the West Building Atrium, 2710 University Drive.
Maya Lilly wrote “Mixed” to illustrate her personal experience of growing up multiracial. Her play brings to life eight characters, male and female, with ethnic backgrounds rarely explored in the mass media.
According to Maya Lilly’s website: “The play ‘Mixed’ has been described as the first truly multi-cultural portrayal of Americans ever.” Finally, here we have the narratives of those ignored by the U.S. Census for years; those who have fallen through the cracks of the political system; those who were once told by doctors that they might be born ‘degenerate’ or ‘deformed.’ After centuries of misunderstanding, these stories make the audience understand what it is to belong to many cultures and, simultaneously, to none.”
The show was one of the finalists for the 2008 Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival, a multicultural festival of women solo artists. Christina Moses is the actress touring with “Mixed” this fall in the Pacific Northwest.
Admission is free and open to the public. The performance is sponsored by the student-run Multicultural Club.
