Bids for construction of a new 18-hole golf course at the site of the current nine-hole course on the WSU-Pullman campus were higher than anticipated, according to university officials.
Bids were opened late last week. Mel Taylor, director of special projects for WSU’s Office of Business Affairs, said the university still plans to move forward with the project, which is expected to take about two years to complete.
The university will reexamine the project in light of the bids and will determine how the course can be built within the original budget of $8.4 million. Taylor told The Spokesman-Review that the bids were about 20 percent higher than expected, with some of that due to increased fuel prices.
The university plans to fund the project through fund raising and by borrowing against future golf course revenues.
The existing course will not reopen for the summer golf season. Construction on the new course is expected to begin this summer.
