PULLMAN, Wash. — An authority on European politics, Karlheinz Reif, will
present a public lecture at Washington State University later this week.
His talk, “Challenges and Problems in the European Union,” is slated for 11
a.m. Friday, March 10, in Lighty Student Services Building, Room 405.
Employed by the European Commission as advisor to the director general for
information and communications, Reif has experience in public opinion
surveys and statistics. From 1986-96, he was head of survey research for
EUROBAROMETER, the agency that conducts biannual public opinion
surveys of nations in the European Union.
His current work focuses on obstacles and opportunities for effective
communication between citizens and federal institutions.
A native of Germany, Reif earned a master’s degree in political science at
Stanford University and further advanced degrees from the Universität
Mannheim and Freie Universität Berlin in Germany.
Although stationed in Brussels, Belgium, he is teaching a course on
democracy in the European Union during the winter quarter at the University
of Washington.
