Does your job classification, description really fit?

Is your current AP job classification appropriate for the job you actually do? What about your official job description? Does it match well with your actual responsibilities and duties?
 
Those questions are key to the new Administrative Professional Classification/Compensation Plan currently under review at WSU. Theresa Elliot-Cheslek, HRS interim director, said her department, in consultation with APAC and staff from across campus, has been working for about two years to develop a comprehensive, consistent and systematic approach to AP job classifications and, ultimately, compensation.
 
Ten information sessions have already been held for AP employees to learn more about the plan. Additional information sessions are set for Oct. 21 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Lighty 405 and Oct. 28 from 3 to 4 p.m., also in Lighty 405.
 
Elliot-Cheslek said the plan does not affect “working titles,” those titles that allow employees to better explain their duties to those they work with, both internal and external to the university. But, in some cases the AP classification titles might be changed.
 
Each current job classification is grouped into a “career family” and then within each of those career families are individual job titles that are part of the “career series.” Once the plan is approved, HRS will use a state-of-the-art online market salary survey to develop salary bands appropriate for each career family.
 
“The plan, if implemented, won’t fix all the problems,” Elliot-Cheslek told the Administrative Professional Advisory Council during its monthly meeting on Thursday, “but, it will put a foundation in place for when there is money available.”
 
The revision process started about two years ago, Elliot-Cheslek said, and involved a review of all AP employee positions, about 1,600 in all. Some of the information was wrong or out of date, she said, so corrections were made and that info was sent back to the affected units for review and feedback.
 
The goal, she said, is to create a system that allows WSU to compare “apples to apples” when it does salary comparisons for AP employees.
