WSU final budget plan unveiling set for mid-June

PULLMAN – WSU President Elson S. Floyd and Provost and Executive Vice President Warwick M. Bayly said today that the university’s final plan to meet its budget-reduction goals will be announced within the first two weeks of June.

When the administration announced the preliminary budget plan on May 1, Floyd and Bayly said the final plan would be announced around June 1. Since then, the president and provost have held a number of meetings with students, faculty and staff, and have received extensive input on the budget through personal and email contacts and through the University Budget Committee site. The comments link on the Budget Committee site has received about 200 comments and suggestions since the preliminary budget plan was announced on May 1.

“Your input has provided us with valuable insight and alternative actions to consider. As you know, a university budget is complicated and the size of the required cut in state funding is significant. There is no doubt a reduction of this magnitude impacts the entire university and all those who care so deeply about it,” Floyd and Bayly wrote in an e-mail distributed to the campus community Friday afternoon.

“We will conduct further analysis and endeavor to make appropriate adjustments to the budget plan in an attempt to preserve more jobs and programs while still accommodating the $54 million reduction. This necessary work cannot be completed by June 1.”

In the state budget approved by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire earlier this month, the university’s state allocation was reduced by 10.38 percent or about $54 million for the upcoming biennium.

The new budget will go into effect on July 1.
