Bakra Bata Brings Music to Glenn Terrell Mall

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University will present Bakra Bata as it brings the percussion sounds of Brazil, Africa, Cuba and Haiti to Glenn Terrell Mall from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 21.

The principal instrument featured in the six-man band is the steel drum (a “pan”), combined with a variety of other percussion instruments. The unusual instrumentation is a visual and aural delight for audiences. There will be an encore performance at 6 p.m. in Reaney Park in collaboration with Pullman Parks and Recreation.

The movie “Dirty Pretty Things” will be shown at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22 in the Compton Union Building auditorium. Admission is free. When an illegal Nigerian immigrant (Chjwetel Ejiofor) working as a night porter at an upscale London hotel finds evidence of a bizarre murder, he teams up with a Turkish chambermaid (Audrey Tautou) and a Chinese prostitute (Sophie Okonedo) to solve the crime. The movie is R-rated.

The Summer Reading Series will feature “Falling Angels” from noon to 1 p.m. July 22 in the Bookie Lodge. The novel is by Tracy Chevalier, author of “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” The story is set against a gas-lit backdrop of social and political turbulence in early 20^th century London. Chevalier draws a picture of family life that exposes the prejudices and flaws a changing time.
