Doug Call, senior vice provost, has announced his intention to return to his faculty role as a regents professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine, effective July 1, 2026. Call assumed the senior vice provost role in January 2024 and has since played a pivotal role in advancing WSU’s efforts in faculty development and recognition.
Among his most significant accomplishments, Call led the development of WSU’s first-ever faculty workload policy. This landmark policy more fully recognizes the breadth and impact of faculty contributions, promoting fair and transparent work assignments across all faculty tracks, ranks, and career stages. It also advances a more holistic understanding of the depth and interconnected nature of faculty work throughout an academic career.
“Doug’s thoughtful leadership and deep commitment to faculty have had a lasting impact on WSU. I am especially grateful for his partnership during this transition and for the care he has taken to ensure a strong onboarding process for his successor,” said Provost and Executive Vice President Chris Riley-Tillman. “His collaborative approach, institutional knowledge, and dedication to faculty success have strengthened our university, and we are fortunate that he will continue contributing to WSU through his research and mentorship.”

Call joined WSU in 2000 as a faculty member in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology. He holds a PhD in zoology and was named a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2014 for his research on antibiotic‑resistant bacteria in agricultural systems. This spring he was named a fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology. Over his career, he has trained more than 20 graduate students and authored more than 270 peer‑reviewed publications, with research supported by the CDC, NIH, NSF, DOD, USDA, and Wellcome Trust.
In recognition of his scholarship and service, Call received the WSU Sahlin Eminent Faculty Award, the WSU Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Research, Scholarship and Arts, and the WSU Distinguished Faculty Address. He served as chair of the WSU Faculty Senate in 2021–22 and was recently named president-elect of the Washington State Academy of Sciences.
The Provost’s Office plans to launch an internal search for a new vice provost for faculty affairs and development later this month.
