PULLMAN, Wash. – Culture and the world community will be showcased at Washington State University’s newest student residence building, Global Scholars Hall, set to open in August.
Diversity-focused leadership, intercultural competence and communication, mentoring and professional guest speakers will comprise residential programming. A student advisory board will ensure the hall continues to thrive.
“College is about learning and developing skills, and that is often focused on internships and classes,” said TJ Martin, residential education director for Global Scholars Hall. “The residential living environment is often forgotten about.
“We hear a lot about being a part of a global community,” he said. “I see this hall as an opportunity to delve into what that means.”
Under construction in the Northside residence hall complex, the $40 million building will contain 272 living spaces including single and double rooms, suites and a floor of apartment-style suites. An outdoor courtyard, rooftop terrace, spaces for scholarly discussion and a Fresh Market will be incorporated.
The Fresh Market will be three times larger than other WSU dining services markets with longer, later hours. Organic produce, convenience foods, grocery items and Einstein Bros. Bagels will be available for purchase, as well as grab-and-go salads and sandwiches.
“We’re always trying to meet the demands of students, so we’re really starting with our best foot forward on this project,” said Sarah Larson, associate director of dining services.
