Through Dec. 19: Tri-Cities taking food donations for students

By Madison Rosenbaum, WSU Tri-Cities communications intern

cougarcupboard-logoRICHLAND, Wash. – Washington State University Tri-Cities is accepting food donations through Dec. 19 for the Cougar Cupboard, a food bank specifically designed for students on the campus.

Students on the campus who are in need can request food starting Dec. 17 at http://tricities.wsu.edu/finaid/foodbank.

“We see a lot of students in a situation where financial aid does not always meet their basic needs,” said Jordyn Wright, financial aid and scholarships coordinator. “This is our way of helping to bridge the gap to help them to be as successful as possible.”

The food bank is open year-round for students in need but current donations will be distributed in time for the holiday break.

Cougar Cupboard collection boxes are posted around campus, or donated items may be taken to West 269 at the WSU Tri-Cities campus, 2710 Crimson Way, Richland.

Non-perishable items that will be accepted include:

• Boxed milk (dairy, almond, soy)
• Canned beans, chicken, chili, fruit, soups, tuna and vegetables
• Healthy cereals
• Instant potatoes
• Macaroni and cheese
• Pasta and sauce
• Peanut butter

The Cougar Cupboard is partially supported by the Richland Rotary Club.

“The Cougar Cupboard is a great way for the community to come together to support our students and alleviate some of their stress outside of the classroom,” said Cherish Tijerina Pearson, WSU Tri-Cities disability service coordinator.
