Nov. 19-20: New food safety rules discussed in workshop

By Angela Lenssen, School of Food Science

food-science-logoSEATTLE – Food safety and law experts will discuss the effects of and compliance with new U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rules at a public workshop Nov. 19-20 at the Double Tree by Hilton, Seattle Airport, 18740 International Blvd. The rules are scheduled for release Nov. 13.

Registration costs $274 and is available at https://ocrs.wsu.edu/Signup/?eventid=965.

Practical guidance

Management, compliance officers, food safety personnel, attorneys and regulators from food and beverage processors, distributors and importers are invited to learn about the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) during presentations and question-and-answer sessions. The goal is to equip participants with practical guidance.

The program qualifies for a maximum of 12 contact hours for recertification of certified food scientists and is pending approval for 9 hours of continuing legal education credit.

Wide-reaching reform

The most sweeping reform of U.S. food safety laws in more than 70 years, FSMA was signed into law in January 2011. It grants FDA a number of new powers, including mandatory recall authority and a shift in focus from responding to contamination to preventing it.

FSMA requires FDA to undertake more than a dozen rulemakings and issue at least 10 guidance documents, as well as a host of reports, plans, strategies, standards, notices and other tasks.

The workshop is presented by the School of Food Science, a unified program between Washington State University and University of Idaho. Learn more at http://sfs.wsu.edu/.
