Oct. 7: ‘Garbology’ author to give Common Reading Lecture

Pullman, Wash–Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward Humes will deliver the Common Reading Invited Lecture at Washington State University at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the M.G. Carey Senior Ballroom of the Compton Union Building (CUB). The event is free and open to the public.

One of the Southern California writer’s most popular books, Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash, is in use this academic year as the common book used in dozens of classes for first-year and other students at the university, including those in the Global Campus. Garbology is the eighth book in as many years to be used as a common reading by students and their professors, stimulating conversations around a shared topic across disciplines and experiences and events beyond the classroom.

Humes decided to become a write at age 6, and became a journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize for his newspaper coverage of the military. He next authored several non-fiction books that delve into people, places, and events. In Garbology and two other books he focuses on the environment, sustainability, and the “critical issue of waste.”

Humes has taught writing and journalism at the University of California-Irvine, Chapman University, and the University of Oregon.

Following his Oct. 7 lecture, he will be available to sign copies of his books in the CUB.

The use of Garbology as the common reading has inspired many awareness-raising projects, presentations, and events focusing on the environment and recycling.
