April 10: Integrative learning, transfer focus of talk

PULLMAN, Wash. – Teaching so students learn to apply acquired knowledge and skills to new situations will be discussed by visiting professor Rebecca Nowacek in a free, public presentation 3-4:30 p.m. Monday, April 10, in CUE 518 at Washington State University. Light refreshments will be served.

Her talk will be delivered via AMS to Spokane (SAC 145A), Vancouver (VECS 125), Tri-Cities (CIC 125T) and Everett (Gray Wolf Hall 157).

“Integrative Learning: Teaching for Transfer across the Disciplines,” will be based on Nowacek’s 2011 book, “Agents of Integration: Understanding Transfer as a Rhetorical Act.” She has also authored “Literacy, Economy, and Power” (2013) and “Citizenship Across the Curriculum” (2010).

“Her presentation, as part of the Writing Program Speaker Series, will help faculty and graduate students engage student writers in their efforts across multiple disciplines,” said Victor Villanueva, WSU Regents professor and writing program director.

Nowacek is an associate professor of English Marquette University where she directs the Norman H. Ott Memorial Writing Center. Her research focuses on writing across the disciplines and writing transfer. She was a Carnegie Scholar with the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and the 2012 recipient of Marquette University’s Robert and Mary Gettel Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence.

Her appearance is hosted by the WSU Writing Program. For more information, contact Xyanthe Neider, xneider@wsu.edu. Learn more at https://writingprogram.wsu.edu/.
