PULLMAN, Wash. – Ten scholars presented their research on a variety of topics including criminal justice, ethnic studies, history, nursing, psychology and zoology earlier this month at Washington State University’s 2014 McNair Achievement Program symposium.
The symposium provides McNair scholars with an initial opportunity to present their research in a formal setting. Throughout the year, they also present their research at conferences and symposiums on campus and across the country.
Several WSU McNair scholars were selected to present their research at WSU’s SURCA (Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities), the Ivy Plus Symposium at Harvard University, Phi Alpha Theta (History) Northwest Regional Conference hosted by the University of Montana, the International Society for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity (ISBNPA) conference in San Diego, CA, and the National McNair Conference hosted by the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
Scholars participating in this year’s symposium were Antonio Martinez, Shanee Wimberly, Maria Orozco, Tillie Torpey, Christina Sessoms, Rebeca Orozco, Brian Cieslak, Melissa Tilley, Tia Sonesouphab, and Kayla Titialii.
“After almost a year of painstakingly giving life and substance to my research project, the end of the year symposium was a great platform to share the work that I am so very proud of,” said Martinez. “The symposium was great but it’s only the starting point. It marks the beginning of getting ready to present at other conferences alongside my fellow McNair Scholars and research oriented students.”
