RICHLAND, Wash. – Washington State University Tri-Cities will offer an interactive workshop series to prepare engineers, new graduates and advanced engineering students for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) professional exam.
Registrations must be received by Friday, Aug. 2, at the Career Development Center at WSU Tri-Cities at 509-372-7600 or careers@tricity.wsu.edu. The series is coordinated by Rick Cameron, a licensed professional engineer, senior engineer at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and adjunct instructor with WSU Tri-Cities.
The 12-week series starts Aug. 7 and ends Oct. 19. The sessions are held Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings at WSU Tri-Cites, 2710 Crimson Way, Richland. The $400 registration cost is significantly less than that charged for similar prep programs in Spokane, Seattle and Portland — with no time lost for travel.
The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) manages professional standards for licensed professional engineers (PE). Among the requirements to qualify to take the PE exam, engineers must earn a degree from an accredited engineering program, pass the FE exam and meet the applicable experience requirements.
“The FE exam essentially covers the entire four years of study in engineering,” Cameron said. The two-part exam has about 180 questions. Test takers have an average of two minutes to answer each of the 120 general topics questions and an average of four minutes to answer each of the 60 discipline-specific topics questions such as mechanical, electrical or civil engineering.
The workshops at WSU Tri-Cities total 40 hours of review, including presentations by professional engineers, practice problems, exam-day techniques and two mini-practice exams.
The FE exam is typically the first step in the process leading to the PE license. The NCEES exam lasts eight hours and is administered annually in April and October in Pullman, Puyallup and Spokane.
WSU Tri-Cities offers four-year bachelor degrees in civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering – each accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
