Pete Julian named cross country head coach

PULLMAN – Director of Athletics Bill Moos and Cougar Track & Field Head Coach Rick Sloan named Pete Julian as head coach of the WSU cross country teams on Thursday.

Julian is in his second season of coaching the Cougars’ men and women middle distance, distance and cross country runners at WSU.

“I am happy for Coach Julian to receive the title of Head Cross Country Coach,” Sloan said. “He has done a great job with our distance program in his first year and is deserving of the title that goes with his responsibilities. Distance running at WSU is in very capable hands.”

Last season, the Cougar women had one student athlete, Lisa Egami, advance to the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Julian recruited and signed an outstanding class of freshmen to this year’s men’s and women’s cross country teams including state champions from Washington, Oregon and Nevada.

Julian came to WSU from Metropolitan State College of Denver where he served four seasons as the men’s and women’s cross country head coach and three seasons as the men’s and women’s track and field head coach. During Julian’s tenure, Metro State garnered 11 NCAA All-America distance honors and 37 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors for sprints, jumps, distance and relays. The Metro State men’s track team also received national academic honors from the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association, finishing in the DII top 20 in 2009 for team grade point average.
