March 31: Dungeons & Dragons-inspired play at WSU

PULLMAN, Wash. — Laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres and ’90s pop culture, Qui Nguyen’s action-packed dramatic comedy, “She Kills Monsters,” will open at Washington State University on Friday, March 31.

Directed by Benjamin Gonzales, six performances will be held March 31 and April 1, 7 and 8 in Daggy Hall’s Jones Theatre at 7:30 p.m. nightly; 2 p.m. matinees will be April 1 and 8. The last three performances coincide with Mom’s Weekend at WSU.

The production includes strong language and mild adult themes.

Reserved seating for each performance costs $10 adults and $8 seniors (ages 60 and better), students and youth. A discounted rate of $6 per person is available to groups of eight or more.

Tickets are on sale at TicketsWest outlets, including online at http://ticketswest.com/events/wsu-performing-arts/10391/, by phone at 800-325-SEAT and in person at WSU’s Beasley Coliseum (ticket office open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday) and at the Rosauers supermarket in Lewiston, Idaho. Convenience charges apply at all locations except Beasley. The Daggy Hall box office will open two hours before each performance for ticket sales and will-call.

“She Kills Monsters” tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home after the death of her family in a car accident. When she finds her younger sister Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, Agnes decides to learn more about her sister by playing through a Dungeons & Dragons campaign Tilly had created.

“Agnes is on a journey to find her sister and finds herself,” said Gonzales.

In 2013, “She Kills Monsters” was awarded the American Alliance for Theatre & Education’s Distinguished Play Award honoring outstanding plays for young people.

“This play is both poignant and hilarious,” said Gonzales. “It never pulls punches and allows us to approach some dark lines when it comes to comedy.” Though a tragic event motivates Agnes, “She Kills Monsters” remains a comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, action sequences included.

“The play allows for some wonderful fight choreography,” said Gonzales. “From a ravaging horde of kobolds to a particularly foul-mouthed fairy, these fights are fast, funny and explosive.”

Parking for each performance will be available without permits or fees in the Daggy Hall parking garage and in the Green 2 lot directly across the street from Daggy Hall.

“She Kills Monsters” is presented by WSU Performing Arts (http://performingarts.wsu.edu/) by special arrangement with Samuel French Inc. and with generous support from the Residence Inn by Marriott, Pullman.
