PULLMAN, Wash. – At the next faculty-led workshop, associate professor Sola Adesope will discuss how concept mapping can promote students’ critical-thinking skills.

Concept mapping – which requires drawing relationships between concepts (see example) – is better than text for making students think deeply about how ideas are connected, Adesope said.
“I could use the words pneumonia, antibiotics and bacteria and come up with a sentence,” he said. “With concept maps you have to look at what causes what, what can be cured with what, what can kill what – you’re using deep critical thinking, which promotes learning.”
Adesope, of the College of Education, is one of the world’s leading researchers on concept mapping. He will share information from his published research as well as new studies that are under review for publication.
