SPOKANE, Wash. – Bipartisan support from Spokane lawmakers brought Washington State University’s efforts to create the state’s second publically funded medical school one step closer to reality Tuesday.
At a news conference at WSU’s health science campus in Spokane, Sen. Michael Baumgartner, R-Spokane, and Rep. Marcus Riccelli, D-Spokane, said that WSU’s proposal will train doctors badly needed in underserved areas of the state.
The two lawmakers propose to change a 1917 law that restricts medical education to the University of Washington. They also propose funding for WSU to seek accreditation as a medical education provider.
