Nov. 22: Diabetes forum focuses on workplace wellness

Campbell-K-80SPOKANE, Wash. – What simple adjustments can be made in a workplace to help employees prevent diabetes? And why should employers care?

Those questions will be answered at a free public forum the morning of Friday, Nov. 22, in the South Campus Facility behind The Bookie, 410 E. Spokane Falls Blvd., on Washington State University’s health sciences campus.

The keynote speaker is a nationally known WSU expert in diabetes; he will begin the program at 9:15 a.m. with a 45-minute presentation, “Why Workplace Wellness Must Be Adopted.”

The speaker, R. Keith Campbell, retired last month after devoting his 45-year career as a professor of pharmacy at WSU to diabetes education. He is continuing work as a professor emeritus at WSU Pullman.

Forum organizers have titled this a “Diabetes Prevention Summit” and want to attract business owners and managers as well as those responsible for workplace wellness and safety. Organizers hope to give employers tools to implement workplace policies that encourage employees to make lifestyle changes.

The forum opens at 8:45 a.m. with a half-hour continental breakfast and visits with vendors. Campbell’s speech will be followed by a presentation by Scott Pritchard of the Washington State Health Care Authority.

The forum will conclude with a panel discussion with Ted Duncan of the American Diabetes Association and Lisa Woodard, a clinical faculty member in the WSU College of Pharmacy in Spokane.

Parking is available in the yellow lot behind the Bookie, and parking tickets may be purchased at the kiosk in the lot or at the WSU parking office inside the South Campus Facility. The forum is co-sponsored by the American Diabetes Association and the WSU Diabetes Initiative group, an interdisciplinary diabetes education collaborative created on the health sciences campus in 2005. The initiative holds a public forum every fall semester.
