Northwest Public Radio’s Swanson elected to NPR board

WASHINGTON – Kerry Swanson, station manager for Northwest Public Radio (NWPR), has been elected to the board of directors for National Public Radio (NPR). The three-year term begins in November.

NWPR is part of The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University.

“This truly is an exciting opportunity,” said Swanson. “It reflects on the work all of us have done in raising Northwest Public Radio and the Murrow College to national prominence.”

The board is responsible for setting policies and the overall direction of the NPR system. The board sets goals for NPR management, monitors performance and provides financial oversight. Of the 17 members of the board, 10 are managers of NPR member stations and are elected to the board by fellow stations.

“NPR continues to provide a powerful journalistic voice, and my pledge has been to help ensure that voice remains relevant and strong,” said Swanson.

NPR partners with member stations to create an informed public – one challenged and invigorated by a deeper understanding and appreciation of events, ideas and cultures. To accomplish this, NPR pledges to produce and distribute programming that meets the highest standards of public service in journalism and cultural expression.

NWPR is a multi-station network serving listeners in Washington and portions of Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia. Programming from the 18 transmitters and 13 translators reaches more than 3.6 million residents in the region.

NWPR is a community service of The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at WSU. KWSU-AM was one of the original charter member stations of NPR in 1970.
