PULLMAN, Wash. – Community members are invited to welcome new students to Washington State University during Move-in 2013 on Aug. 10 and 11.

More than 100 people have signed up of the 300 sought. Groups are encouraged to participate. Each participant will receive a free T-shirt. To sign up for a four-hour shift, visit the dean of students website at http://deanofstudents.wsu.edu/move-in-2013/.

Interested faculty and staff are asked to coordinate with their appropriate department administrators regarding scheduling. Contact human resource services with questions regarding comp time, flexing schedules and other options.

During Move-in 2013, WSU employees, students and community members will greet new freshman and transfer students upon their arrival at residence halls and help them move in their belongings.

Mel Morgan, assistant dean of students and coordinator of Move-in 2013, said it is a perfect way to show new students and their families what WSU’s motto of “world class, face-to-face” really means.

“It is always exciting when our new students arrive,” she said. “We are helping them begin the next big chapter in their lives.”

For last year’s Move-in, Earnest Menocal organized a group of helpers from Hills Church.

“Our group loved helping out the students at Streit-Perham Halls and it’s something we’d like to participate in yearly,” he said.

Deb Nelson, a faculty member in human development, also had a great time last year even though the weather was very warm.

“Parents were sooo appreciative,” she said. “They truly did not expect the amount of help they received.”

Parents Joseph and Gillian Block from Renton, Wash., received help moving their son into Goldsworthy Hall.

“We really appreciated the organization that went into making this such a pleasant experience,” they wrote Morgan. “We were amazed at how quickly our vehicle was unpacked. Everyone involved was wonderful and very helpful.”

“It is a great opportunity for WSU employees, alumni and members of our community to welcome families to Pullman,” said Karen Peterson from WSU’s budget office.
