SPOKANE, Wash. – The concept of “community giving” expanded around the world recently, as Washington State University Spokane’s Combined Fund Drive (CFD) celebration resulted in a care package delivery – complete with Cougar flag – to U.S. airmen in Kyrgyzstan.

For more than 25 years, the CFD has been the authorized philanthropic giving program for state employees in Washington. It helps employees support local, national and international nonprofit organizations, but the majority of giving is local.

Every year WSU Spokane hosts a CFD celebration to raise money for area charities. Baskets donated by campus departments are auctioned, and the money goes to the winner’s charity of choice.

But this year, the winner of the Spokane WWAMI medical education department basket was asked to ship it as a care package to U.S. armed forces abroad. It was sent to an Air Force team serving in the central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan. The note below was returned to WSU Spokane:

“Thank you for helping make this care package happen. The guys in my shop and I truly enjoyed all the items in the box. Several of us are actually stationed at Fairchild AFB, near Spokane, and some of us are WSU fans.

“It was a little tough getting one of my airmen, who is a Huskies fan, to pose with the Coug flag, but he was appreciative of your support and acquiesced.”
