WSU seeks nominations for MLK Distinguished Service Awards

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University’s Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is a couple of months away, but it isn’t too early to nominate people for WSU’s MLK Distinguished Service Awards. The Award deadline is Friday, Nov. 30.

“It is important for WSU to take time to honor people for doing important work that helps make the university a more inclusive and successful place,” said Marc Robinson, director of WSU’s culture and Heritage Houses and lead organizer for the MLK Celebration.

Robinson said the criteria for this year’s award had been broadened.
“In the past this award focused a lot on the recruitment and retention of diverse students,” he said. “We wanted to broaden the scope to include additional community services such as helping the food bank, planting trees in a park, or assisting the elderly or youth, for example.”

Winners will be chosen based upon their service in one or all of the following areas: altruism and community service, advancement of diversity, and tolerance and inclusion.

Awards will be given in five categories: a current WSU faculty member, a current WSU staff member, a currently enrolled WSU student, a group or organization affiliated with WSU, and an individual or group from the surrounding community.

The award winners will be recognized during the WSU Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration on Thursday, Jan. 24, 4-6 p.m., in the CUB Senior Ballroom.
