Bandyopadhyay named fellow of ASM International

PULLMAN, Wash. – Amit Bandyopadhyay, professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Society for Materials (ASM International).

Bandyopadhyay received his award in recognition of his “outstanding publications, licensed inventions, and journal editing in the fields of ceramics and biomedical materials science, engineering, and manufacturing, and for the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students in interdisciplinary fields,” according to the ASM website.

ASM includes 36,000 members around the world in the field of materials science and engineering. Fellows are recognized by their colleagues for their distinguished contributions the field.

A member of the WSU faculty since 1997, Bandyopadhyay conducts research in the processing of ceramics, metals and composites using rapid prototyping technology. In particular, he is working to develop better implants for fracture management and bone disorders.

Bandyopadhyay is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including a National Science Foundation CAREER award and a Young Investigator Program Award from the Office of Naval Research. He has received two research excellence awards and a teaching excellence award from the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, as well as two best paper of the year awards. He has published more than 200 papers and holds eight U.S. patents. He is also a fellow of both the American Ceramic Society and the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.

Originally from Calcutta, India, Bandyopadhyay received a doctorate in materials science and engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1995.
