Info session required for Goldwater Scholarships

PULLMAN, Wash. – Students at Washington State University who are planning a career in STEM research (applied sciences, engineering and math) are invited to learn about applying for a national Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship at two information sessions Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 19 and 20. Students who intend to apply must attend one of the sessions.

The Wednesday session will be 5:45 p.m. in Smith CUE 502. Thursday’s will be at noon in the same place.

The deadline for application submissions to WSU is Dec. 3; the national deadline is in January 2013. Trustees of the Goldwater Foundation have announced plans to award up to 300 scholarships nationally. Scholarships cover eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, room and board.

To be considered for a Goldwater award, a student must meet criteria and be nominated by his/her college or university. As a four-year institution, WSU is eligible to nominate up to four sophomore or junior students during the 2012-13 academic year.

The $7,500 Goldwater award for college students was established by the U.S. Congress to honor its namesake, a soldier and long-serving statesman. The scholarships provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers and help foster excellence in those fields.

Records show that, since 1990, 15 WSU undergraduates have received Goldwater awards; their majors ranged from microbiology, biochemistry and genetics to computer science and materials science engineering. An additional six students received honorable mentions.
WSU faculty members with questions about the Goldwater awards can contact Mary Sánchez Lanier, WSU’s Goldwater faculty representative and assistant vice provost and associate dean of the University College, at sanchez@wsu.edu or Sarah Ann Hones, director of WSU’s Distinguished Scholarship program, part of the University College, at shones@wsu.edu.

More information about WSU activities relating to the Goldwater award, and a listing of WSU’s past recipients and those named as honorable mention recipients, is available online here.
