PULLMAN, Wash. – Trevor Greene, a graduate of the Washington State University College of Education’s  superintendent certification program and principal of Toppenish High School, has been named National Secondary Principal for 2013 by the MetLife Resources and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Greene, 43, is the first high school principal in the Northwest to receive the award. Only two national awards are given each year by the organizations, one to a high school principal and the other to a middle school principal.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reported that Greene, a Muscogee-Creek tribal member, is noted for turning the high school on the Yakama reservation into a high-performing institution offering 27 high-profile engineering and biomedical classes. The effort saw state science scores at the school improve by 67 percent over three years, according to the newspaper.
Greene was nominated for the national award by the state’s principals association. His school will receive a $5,000 school-improvement grant as part of the award.

WSU’s two-year, field-based superintendent’s certification program has been recognized nationally for its innovative structure and success in preparing K-12 school superintendents. The program is designed around the ISLLC Standards for School Leaders and emphasizes leadership for school improvement. The field-based superintendent’s certification program is administered through the Spokane campus.
