Interdisciplinary effort is the focus of an upcoming international meeting on global health, and WSU educators, engineers, journalists – as well as scientists – are encouraged to participate, according to a recent e-mail invitation to the WSU community from Guy Palmer of the School for Global Animal Health and Prema Arasu of International Programs.
The second annual meeting of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health, entitled “Transforming Global Health: The Interdisciplinary Power of Universities,” will be Sept. 19-21 at the University of Washington. The deadline registration is Sept. 12.
With more than 110 speakers confirmed, the conference is an opportunity for faculty and department and campus administrators to learn about the challenges of managing programs around the world. Among the goals is to create an institutional infrastructure necessary for WSU to participate in global health education.
The meeting will focus on three cutting-edge themes:
• Building the science base for global health: research and evaluation
• Educational innovations and experiences in global health
• Enabling systems: Legal, regulatory and administrative infrastructure to support advances in global health.

Because WSU is a full member of the consortium, faculty, staff and students can register (by Aug. 20) at the member rate: students $50, faculty/staff $300. Rates go up slightly after that date.
Palmer is director of WSU’s School for Global Animal Health, as well as Regents professor and Creighton chair of pathology and infectious diseases in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Arasu is vice provost and associate vice president of International Programs.
