Animal Adventure Science Camp Culminates Friday with Canine Demonstrations

RICHLAND, Wash. – Kids who have spent the week learning about animals at the Washington State University Tri-Cities Summer Science Camp will see dogs in action Friday morning.

Canine demonstrations range from an agility course to search-and-rescue tracking. This is the “big event” that ends the weeklong “Go Wild! Animal Adventure” science camp. It’s held at WSU Tri-Cities inside and on the grass behind the Consolidated Information Center, 2770 University Drive, Richland.

“We are extremely fortunate to have many dogs on site,” said Craig Peterson, the lead teacher for the Go Wild camp. “There will be a handful of presentations ranging from an attack demonstration with a Doberman, an agility course with a plethora of breeds, and personal trainers showing off what their dogs can do. We will also have a nationally registered search and rescue German shepherd running a tracking course.”

The attack and tracking demonstrations are schedule to start at 9:45 a.m. and conclude by 10:30 a.m.  The other demonstrations will continue until 12 p.m., along with fun activities planned inside the building for the campers and their guests.

The 90 campers are in elementary grades. Many of their parents and siblings will come to the big event to see what their children learned at camp. Throughout the week, the campers have studied different types of animals and built nature kits, bug cages, telescopes, glowing fireflies and sticky octopus arms.

This is the fourth of eight day camps held at WSU Tri-Cities for children who will be entering kindergarten through fifth grade in fall 2010. The weeklong sessions are led by certified local teachers. Other camp themes are Robot Factory, Space and Rocketry, Mystery of the Pharaoh’s Treasure, Innovate: Renewable Energy & Eco-Systems, Wonder: Engineering & Art, and Create: Physics & Ecology.
