St. Helens volcano sensor robots to be used in Chile

VANCOUVER – Small “spider” robots designed by WSU Vancouver’s WenZhan Song and others will make their international debut this month.

The spiders, which have been used to monitor Mount St. Helens, are expected to migrate south to Chaiten, a volcano in Chile that began erupting in 2008 after about 9,000 years of dormancy.

Song is the principal investigator for the technology research project, which also draws on participation from the U.S. Geological Survey and from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
