Another $11.2M in budget cuts
September 20, 2010

PULLMAN – The governor’s order to cut state agencies by 6.3 percent will result in another round of budget cuts for WSU. This will cost WSU an additional $11.2 million in funding. This new cut comes at a time when WSU is wrestling with a $13.5-million reduction in the fiscal year that began in July.

“Universities are hubs of economic activity and act as economic engines for regions and states, “said WSU President Elson S. Floyd. “These cuts to higher education seriously jeopardize our economic recovery, the sustainability of our state economic structure, and our long-term prosperity.”

Dung, who is pursuing his Ph.D. in plant pathology, earned first place in a graduate student paper contest at the Pacific division of the American Phytopathological Society last summer for his work regarding a soil-borne fungus called Verticillium dahliae. He also presented his findings at the regional meeting.

The Pacific division is the largest in the APS and includes members from 13 states.

September 13, 2010

WSU ranks among the state universities that have become the favorites of companies recruiting new hires, according to a Wall Street Journal newspaper survey reported today (Sept. 13). WSU tied for 25th on the list.

The survey of top corporate recruiters, whose companies last year hired 43,000 new graduates, found recruiters find it’s more efficient to focus on fewer large schools and forge deeper relationships with them. Recruiters said graduates of top public universities are often among the most prepared and well-rounded academically and fit well into corporate cultures.

“The ranking strongly indicates that WSU … » More …
