Cougar football plays host to dads, Sun Devils this weekend

head shotPULLMAN, Wash. – It’s Dad’s Weekend at Washington State University, where the Cougars are primed to take on the Arizona State University Sun Devils this Saturday in a sold-out Pac-12 home football matchup beginning at 12:30 p.m. in Martin Stadium.

As of mid-week, only a limited number of standing-room-only game tickets remained available for sale and were expected to sell out before week’s end. Ticket information may be obtained by calling 1-800-GOCOUGS.

Fans and dads arriving on campus by Friday may also want to join the WSU basketball team for “Flashback Friday,” when they take on Pacific University at 6 p.m. in the final exhibition basketball game of the 2015 season. The team will honor former head basketball coach George Raveling and play the game at Bohler Gymnasium, where Raveling coached his initial season with WSU in 1972-73. WSU Athletics will provide George Raveling t-shirts to those in attendance at the game, which is limited by the gym’s capacity to hosting less than 2,500 fans. Raveling is the third-winningest coach in Washington State history with a 167-136 record in 11 seasons, leading two teams to the NCAA Tournament (1980 and 1983).

Other featured Friday entertainment includes a performance by standup comedian Gabriel Iglesias at Beasley Coliseum. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show can be ordered in advance online at TicketsWest.com, or by calling 1-800-325-SEAT (7328).

For a quirky and rather loud celebration of the awesomeness of space science, early arriving fans are invited to the star theater of the WSU Planetarium in Sloan Hall for an immersive trip through time and space. Placing special emphasis on the rocky worlds of the solar system that could host life or provide more places for humans to live, the two presentations, backed by a selection of rock music, are scheduled at 7:30 and 9 p.m. on Friday. The $5 tickets may be purchased in advance through TicketsWest.com.

Saturday

Saturday morning events begin at 9 a.m. with “Marvels of Sciences,” on the Webster Physical Sciences Mall.  The free event features demonstrations and experiments from Physics and Astronomy, Geology and Environmental Sciences, Optical Society of America/SPIE “Year of Light” events, and fun kid’s activities. Rocks, fossils, science toys, books, and t-shirts will be on sale, along with informational hand-outs and Kind Bars (nutrition from pumpkins). A 10:10 a.m. demonstration on volcanoes will be followed at 10:30 a.m. by the annual Pumpkin Drop, in which students pitch pumpkins out of upper-story windows, confirming scientifically once again that gravity can be fun.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, the WSU Chemistry Club will also be holding a free demonstration of some their coolest and most popular reactions in Fulmer Hall Room 438.

The festivities also will get underway Saturday at the Brelsford Visitor Center at 10 a.m., with The Cougar Wine Connections Showcase Series, a collection of wine tasting events held before each WSU home football game. Each event features one Cougar-connected winery/wine brand presented by winery representatives who can share the story of their journey from WSU to the world of fine wine. This Saturday’s event will showcase the Merry Cellars label. The $5 tickets are available at the door and can be applied to the cost of purchasing a bottle of wine. Commemorative glasses are also available while supplies last.

As always on home game weekends, Saturday’s events will include Kickoff at the CUB, featuring food and family-friendly entertainment in a festive atmosphere in the CUB senior ballroom beginning at 9:30 a.m. Attendees can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Palouse from the ballroom balcony, watch football games from around the country, enjoy Butch and the Cougar marching band and participate in numerous giveaways and activities.

The general area of Rogers Field to the west of Martin Stadium will be the site of a number of activities, on Saturday, including Cougar Mania, the corporate tent area; Cougville, a children’s play area complete with activities and inflatables; and the Cougar Den. Food and refreshments are available in all three locations.
