Deadline Oct. 21 for middle school engineering/science teams

futurecity-logoPULLMAN, Wash. – Middle school classes, homeschool groups, 4-H, scouting, church groups and students in eastern Washington are being sought by Oct. 21 to participate in the Future City competition at Washington State University on Jan. 16. Teams work with a WSU engineering mentor to provide a solution to a societal problem.

The winning team will get $500 and transportation/hotel costs to compete at regionals in Seattle in January. The national contest is in Washington, D.C., and the winning team earns a week of space camp in Houston, Texas. Learn more at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5w_of3eCwYQ.

This is the first year a sub-regional competition will be held at WSU for eastern Washington. Sign up a team by Oct. 21 at http://futurecity.org (go to the Find My Region link and click on Eastern Washington State).

For more information, or for math/science enrichment for a middle school student not affiliated with an educational organization, please email WSU engineering instructor Cara Morton at cara.morton@wsu.edu.

Students from east of the Cascades into Montana and northern Idaho are eligible to participate in the preliminary WSU program, which is supported by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. An engineering mentor will work with the children one hour every other week.

The mentor will demonstrate how solving a societal problem of their choice (reducing rates of asthma or improving the natural water supply for wildlife, for example) requires the math and science tools provided in their classrooms.

The program emphasizes having a positive impact on community and ecosystems.
