Sept. 11: Free recital mixes classical, musical theater songs

Williamson-and-RaganPULLMAN, Wash. – A free, public recital will feature guest vocalist Kari Ragan and guest pianist Dean Williamson at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, in Bryan Hall at Washington State University. A reception and Q&A session will follow in Kimbrough Hall 115. Ragan and six WSU students will present a free, public master class 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 12, in Kimbrough Hall B42.

The recital, “Ah, Love But a Day,” will interweave classical and musical theater repertoire.

Ragan is artist-in-residence at University of Washington and has a private studio in Seattle. She is moderator for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Chat program on the NATS website. In 2012 she received the Van L. Lawrence Fellowship presented by The Voice Foundation and NATS for her work in vocal pedagogy.

Williamson recently accepted the position of music director at Nashville Opera. He was principal coach and pianist for Seattle Opera for 12 years and music director of the company’s Young Artists Program for five years. He was music director at Cleveland Opera, artistic director at Nashville Opera and has conducted at opera companies throughout the country.

The recital is sponsored by the WSU School of Music, Student National Association of Teachers of Singing, and Allegro, the student association for musical advocacy.
