WSU offers new online certificate in global leadership

By Richard H. Miller, Global Campus

global-leadershipPULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University’s new online certificate in global leadership combines leadership skills with cultural education, preparing recipients to effect change across intercultural backgrounds and diverse outlooks.

The certificate (http://online.wsu.edu/cert/globalLeadership.aspx) will be available in the fall. Applicants do not need to be enrolled in a degree program at WSU.

“This is an opportunity for all students to develop their leadership qualities and learn how to make a difference in the world,” said Christine Oakley, WSU professor and director of the global learning program.

Students will be equipped with three crucial competencies: intercultural understanding, civic engagement and leadership in a global context.

“As the world grows increasingly interconnected, we are all becoming global citizens,” said Oakley. “But to become global leaders – whether in business ventures or social movements – people need intercultural knowledge and enhanced communications skills.”

The 15-credit undergraduate certificate requires 12 credits from a wide variety of globally oriented courses and three one-credit courses:  leadership development, experiential learning and a capstone project. Students will work directly with a global learning advisor to create a course plan tailored to their goals.

The certificate is offered by WSU’s Office of Undergraduate Education in partnership with International Programs and Global Campus.
