SPOKANE, Wash. – Three Spokane MESA (mathematics, engineering, science achievement) teams will compete May 9 at Washington MESA Day at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Wash. Winners will go on to the national contest in Salt Lake City June 18-21.
A team from Glover Middle School advanced to state after creating the top mobile app at the Computer App Challenge during the local MESA contest. A Salk Middle School team took top honors locally in the Prosthetic Arm Challenge, as did a Lewis & Clark High School team in the high school division.
All teams complete a technical paper, oral presentation and academic display in support of their project.
The prosthetic arm contest requires teams to research, design, build and test low-cost devices, completing proscribed tasks with the arms they create.
The mobile app contest challenges teams to design a mobile application for tablets and smartphones in order to solve a problem.
MESA’s goal is to develop globally competitive and individually competent students in mathematics, engineering and science – with full participation of underrepresented students.
Founded in 1989, the Spokane MESA center is one of six in the state. It is supported by Washington State University Spokane and Eastern Washington University to maintain a high level of service to the Spokane Public Schools district.
