isis-80RICHLAND, Wash. – “The Rise of ISIS and the New Iraq War: Threat, Myth and Blowback” will be discussed by an academic and an imam at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, in the East Auditorium at Washington State University Tri-Cities, 2710 Crimson Way, Richland.

The free, public event is hosted by the WSU Tri-Cities Humanities Club. Guest speakers are Steve Niva, an Evergreen State College faculty member who studies radical Islamic groups and counter terrorism, and Hassan Ziada, adjunct faculty in engineering at WSU Tri-Cities and part-time imam (worship leader) at the Islamic Center in West Richland.

Discussion will focus on the rise, nature and goals of the radical organization known as ISIS and will critically assess the new round of U.S. military intervention in the Middle East.

“The situation concerning ISIS has become the predominant political focus around the world in recent months,” said Michael Pieracci, Humanities Club advisor and clinical associate professor of humanities and social sciences at WSU Tri-Cities. “Rumor and misunderstandings abound regarding the character, motivation and goals of this group.

“The Humanities Club would like to bring together an expert in Mideast politics and an expert on the Islamic religion to explore what we really know about ISIS and its intentions,” he said.
