Oct. 20: Award-winning poet to read, discuss work

Hillman-80PULLMAN, Wash. – Brenda Hillman – teacher, activist and award-winning author of nine volumes of poetry – will read and discuss her work at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, in the Museum of Art/WSU. The free, public event is part of the Washington State University Visiting Writer Series.

“She’s one of the country’s most important poets,” said Debbie Lee, professor of English at WSU and co-director of the series. “Her poetry makes things happen: She writes about things that affect our lives on a daily basis such as war, poverty and the environment, and her poetry shows us how to act and how to take responsibility for our actions.”

Hillman’s books include “Practical Water,” winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Award for Poetry, and “Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire,” winner of the 2014 Griffin Poetry Prize and the Northern California Book Award for Poetry. She received the Academy of American Poets Fellowship in 2012 and holds the Olivia Filippi Chair in Poetry at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif.

Hillman’s appearance is co-sponsored by the WSU Common Reading Program and Gonzaga University.
