PULLMAN, Wash.—The latest organic agriculture research and hands-on teaching methods will be the focus of Washington State University’s free, public Organic Farm Field Day 8:30 a.m.-noon Thursday, July 31, at the Eggert Family Organic Farm on Animal Science Road just northeast of the grizzly bear observation area off Terre View Road. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
Presentations by students working at the farm and the farm manager begin at 8:30 with a tour of the farm to follow. Kevin Murphy, assistant research professor, and graduate students from the WSU Department of Crop and Soil Sciences will review the progress of their field trials on quinoa and other alternative crops.
At 10:30, a tour will take place farther northeast on the farm at Tukey Horticultural Orchard at the corner of Airport and Terre View roads. Light refreshments will be served and visitors are welcome to stay and visit the gardens.
The organic farm offers students the opportunity to earn university credit while working on an operational community-supported agriculture – or CSA – farm. The farm produces more than 30 different vegetable crops as well as fruit, flowers and herbs from a 24-week harvest season.
