WSU Apple Cup Crisp ice cream wins nationwide contest

By Rachel Webber, College of Agricultural, Human & Natural Resource Sciences

apple-cup-crisp-80PULLMAN, Wash. – Apple Cup Crisp ice cream from Washington State University has been named the grand champion out of 12 university-made ice cream flavors in the 2014 Progressive Dairyman magazine’s Flavor Faceoff (http://www.progressivedairy.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12254:2014-flavor-faceoff-meet-the-participants&catid=184:flavor-faceoff&Itemid=349).

The flavor beat out the second place winner, Cornell University’s Bavarian Raspberry Fudge, by about 160 votes in the final round. The WSU Creamery and Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe will be featured in the Sept. 12 issue of the magazine.

Apple Cup Crisp is made from Ferdinand’s (http://public.wsu.edu/~creamery/ferdfront.htm) vanilla ice cream laced with green and spiced apple flavorings, swirled with caramel and spiked full of crispy chunks of oatmeal cookies. Its namesake comes from the annual Apple Cup football game between the WSU Cougars and the University of Washington Huskies.

July is National Ice Cream Month; celebrate with a scoop of Apple Cup Crisp or any of the other delicious flavors from Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe.
