PULLMAN, Wash. – Mobile printing from smartphones and tablets is available at eight locations around the WSU Pullman campus. The new service was developed and is offered by CougarCopies as an enhancement to the Coug Prints remote, on-the-go printing service.
“We’re building on five years of success for the Coug Prints program,” said CougarCopies’ manager Sherry Kimble. “Printing directly from mobile devices is the logical next step.”
After registering a CougarCard at a mobile printing station, a user can print any letter-size document by sending it as an attachment to the Coug Prints email address at coug.mobile.prints@wsu.edu. Then, at one of the mobile printing stations located around campus, the user swipes his or her CougarCard with Cougar CASH to pay a small fee and release the job.
Coug Prints has printing stations throughout campus: four in the Holland and Terrell libraries, two in the Owen Science and Engineering Library, one in the Animal Health Library, one in the CUB and one in each of the four markets co-located with residence halls: Towers, Hillside, Flix and Northside.
“In partnership with Housing and Dining Services, the residence hall printers were moved to the markets to make them more accessible to more people,” said Kimble.
“We’ve worked with the WSU Libraries, CougarCard center, Housing and Dining, the Compton Union Building, the Graduate and Professional Student Association and the Associated Students of WSU for several years to enable students, faculty and staff to print on the go,” she said.
Printing is secure and each job is tied to the identity of a particular user so only that person can print it. Based on a commercially available product, the mobile printing service was customized for WSU by University Communications’ system administrator Bryan Herron in collaboration with Kimble, Kurt Albrecht and colleagues from Information Services, Housing and Dining, WSU Libraries, the CougarCard center and other units on campus.
“The mobile printing service is housed on a dedicated server,” said Albrecht, CougarCopies’ information technology specialist. “The process of sending and releasing a print job linked to the user’s WSU Network ID is simplified with increased security.”
