SURCA now accepting abstracts from undergrad researchers, sign-ups for judges

PULLMAN, Wash.—The Washington State University Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) is now accepting abstracts from undergraduate researchers and sign-ups from judges on its website at http://surca.wsu.edu.

The deadline for abstract submissions for SURCA is Friday, Feb. 17.

SURCA logoShelley Pressley, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research, said she expects the third annual SURCA to feature the research, scholarship, and creative activities—known collectively as research—of students from all majors, in all grades, and from all campuses.

“We began planning in fall for the afternoon event and we expect SURCA 2014 to be the largest and best yet, and to have more than 150 students present their work in poster and oral presentations this spring,” she said.

As in previous years, SURCA needs many learned judges to evaluate student presentations in eight categories at the competition.

“We invite faculty and post-docs to serve as judges in SURCA, as well as anyone with expertise and work experience from industry, government, non-profit organizations, and other entities beyond WSU,” Pressley said.

SURCA is the fourth part of what makes up WSU Showcase, an annual tradition at the university that celebrates the academic achievements of faculty, staff, and students. WSU Showcase also includes the Distinguished Faculty Address (on March 27, Thursday), and Academic Showcase (on March 28, Friday morning), and the Celebrating Excellence awards program and banquet (March 28, Friday evening).

In the past, students could apply to show their research at Academic Showcase. This year, that event is accepting abstracts from faculty, staff, and graduate and professional students only.  SURCA is for undergraduate students only.

As in the past, students with the highest SURCA judges’ scores in the eight categories will win prizes.

More information on SURCA and access to the online abstract applications and judges’ sign-up forms is available online.  Questions may be directed to UGresearch@wsu.edu or 509-335-1252.
