PULLMAN, Wash. – Student staff members of The Daily Evergreen took home three national honors this week at the country’s largest annual gathering of student media professionals and student journalists.

Awards presented at the Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Association joint annual conference are considered some of the most competitive in student journalism, said Candace Baltz, general manager of Washington State University’s student publications.

Evergreen-cover-200“The Daily Evergreen exists to provide students with the opportunities, training and experience to reach their potential,” she said.

“Publishing a daily paper is a full-time job for professionals, but students do it while also enrolled full-time in classes. These awards are especially sweet knowing how hard the students work,” she said.

WSU students earned awards in photography, advertising and design:

* Photo Editor Nathan Howard’s image of a window washer at Terrell Library placed fourth for Best Feature Photography; there were 800 submissions across five categories. He is a junior communication major from Redmond, Wash.

“When I took the assignment I thought, ‘Oh great another boring feature shoot,’ and next thing I knew I had this amazing shot,” he said. “I definitely don’t hesitate to take the boring assignments anymore; I see them more as a challenge.

“As a photographer you’re always trying to tell a story with nothing more than a single frame,” he said. “Getting this award motivated me to keep advancing and keep trying to tell those stories.”

Evergreen-ad-200* Summer 2013 Graphics Manager Jeremy Hauck designed a full-page, full-color ad that took fourth for Best Display Ad; there were 200 submissions in five categories. He is a senior broadcast production major from Kent, Wash., who designed the ad to bring in a prospective client for the self-sustaining student newspaper.

“You need to be humble when creating art for clients, and having patience doesn’t hurt either,” he said. Hauck. “I thought the concept truly was executed the way I envisioned it.”

* Spring 2013 Graphics Manager Emily Blair was awarded an honorable mention for Best Newsmagazine/Special Section Cover in the Design of the Year competition; there were more than 500 entries across five categories. She is a double major in advertising and English from Woodinville, Wash., who graduated in May and works as a marketing assistant at Shoreline Community College.

She impressed judges with her modern and whimsical depiction of the WSU Pullman campus and community on the cover of The Daily Evergreen’s Spring 2013 Housing Guide publication.

“I hope this can be a stepping stone to even more creativity at The Daily Evergreen,” she said.
