Dear Cougs,
Tyre Nichols was a father. A skateboarder. A photographer. His senseless murder in Memphis earlier this month is a tragedy and an injustice that has become far too common in our society. My sincere condolences go out to Mr. Nichols’ family and friends.
The bodycam video that is set to be released this afternoon will undoubtedly contain footage that is graphic, violent, and upsetting. The impacts of this video will reverberate throughout our community and the country, and will cause a great deal of pain and anger.
Even in sadness and grief we can work toward justice. Please remember that we all have power within ourselves to inform change. Let us start by supporting our families, friends, and colleagues who are reeling. Have the hard conversations and learn and grow from places of discomfort. If you can make a positive impact in one person’s life, that impact will ripple out to our communities and beyond. Together, we can make a difference.
We are a family at WSU. In addition to utilizing our crisis resources, I encourage you to find community within our campus identity groups or Multicultural Student Services. We are here for you. Reach out to me, your supervisors, your advisors, or your friends and peers. Take the time you need to process and heal. Speak out against injustices. And, as always, support your fellow Cougs.
