Pizhong Qiao named Engineering Mechanics Institute Fellow

qiao pizhongPULLMAN, Wash. – Pizhong Qiao, professor in WSU’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was recently named a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Engineering Mechanics Institute.

Qiao was recognized for his significant contributions to civil engineering research, particularly in structural composites and mechanics, and his commitment and participation within the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI).

At WSU since 2006, Qiao has conducted research in the areas of smart structural health monitoring, impact-resistant materials and high-performance green concretes.

He has received funding support from a variety of public and private sources, including from the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Federal Highway Administration, WSDOT, NASA, Boeing, and Center for Environmentally Sustainable Transportation in Cold Climates.  He has published more than 170 peer-reviewed journal articles in the areas of mechanics, materials and structures, and he is among the top 150 Most Cited Researchers in the subject of Civil Engineering by Elsevier and Shanghai Ranking in 2016.

He has received several teaching and research awards.  In 2007, he was named a fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).  He also won a national award for outstanding technical contributions from ASCE’s aerospace division, making him the second recipient in the award history. He received the best research paper award from ASCE’s Journal of Composites for Construction. In 2012, Qiao received the Voiland College’s Anjan Bose Outstanding Research Award.

Qiao will be recognized as a fellow at the upcoming EMI 2017 conference, set for June in San Diego.
