Approximately 400 U.S. and Canadian mathematicians will visit the WSU Pullman campus April 22-23 to participate in the Western Sectional Meeting of the American Mathematical Society.
The meeting, hosted by the WSU Department of Mathematics and Statistics, will feature plenary talks by professors Michael Hitrik, UCLA; Andrew Raich, University of Arkansas; and Daniel Rogalski, University of California at San Diego. In addition, there will more than 350 shorter talks given in 22 parallel sessions.
Although many of the participants will be from the western United States, there are registrants from at least 35 U.S. states, as well as Canada and Mexico.
Sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including aspects of theoretical mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical biology, data science and mathematics education.
The conference runs from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, April 22, and from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, April 23. The conference will take place in Smith Center for Undergraduate Education and Wilson-Short Hall. On Saturday evening the Department of Mathematics and Statistics will be hosting a reception for all participants in the University Art Museum.
Preconference ‘Data Science Day’
In addition to the conference, noted above, WSU also will host a preconference Data Science Day, on Friday April 21.
Participants for this event include a wide range of companies, universities and government labs, including WSU, University of Idaho, Gonzaga U., Courant Institute, Williams College, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Intel, Noddle, Multiscale Health Systems, Descartes Labs, and Emsi. The expertise of the participants range over many areas in the mathematical sciences, computer science, engineering, economics and physics, all with an eye towards insight into challenging data analysis problems. Topics will include scientific, industrial/business, and educational domains.
In addition to the pre-conference sessions, there will be opportunities for participants to talk with students interested in internships and postgraduate positions.
