PULLMAN, Wash. – Douglas Call has been selected to give the 2017 Distinguished Faculty Address as part of the annual Showcase celebration.
He will talk about “Tackling the Wicked Problem of Antibiotic Resistance” at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30, in the Animal Disease Biotechnology Facility (ADBF) 1002. A reception will follow. The annual award from Washington State University recognizes a faculty member whose achievements in research, scholarship and teaching place him or her in the front ranks of his or her discipline.
Call’s research has expanded understanding of the pathways by which microbes develop resistance to antibiotics. In particular, his work was the first to recognize that the environment must be taken into account in order to block antimicrobial resistance. He is project director of a global effort in east Africa to map the pathways by which resistance arises, spreads and is maintained in communities.
He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and holds appointments as an advisor on the U.S. Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He worked with the Washington Global Health Alliance and federal lawmakers to assemble the Washington State Antimicrobial Resistance Coalition. He is a member of state, national and international groups working to understand and develop solutions to antibiotic resistance.
Call has mentored 18 graduate students and 22 undergraduate researchers. He teaches graduate courses and has received awards from the WSU Honors College for Thesis Advisor of the Year and for Excellence in Scholarship. He has served on the WSU Faculty Status and Research and Arts committees and as chair of the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Tenure and Promotion.
He earned his Ph.D. in zoology from WSU in 1997 and is the associate director for research and graduate education in the Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health.
